Psychotherapy, Counselling, Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)- In Office, Video, Telephone

I strive to make mental health support accessible and flexible by offering sessions in person in my office in Milton, as well as by online secure encrypted video call and by phone. I believe that we all need support, and more or less is needed depending on whatever situations we are dealing with. Rather than viewing a call for help as a weakness, we need to see it as sanity and strength in an often crazy world.

How I Work...

I believe that the key to personal change through therapy lies in nurturing a positive, trusting, and respectful therapeutic relationship with my clients. I believe that as individuals we are all inherently whole, yet through life’s bumps and bruises we sometimes come to see ourselves as broken or incapable of surmounting life’s challenges. By exploring people’s stories, I help my clients to unearth the beliefs driving their behaviours, reactions, and choices. Then we work towards reframing their thoughts, goals, and beliefs about themselves in order to move forward with their current vision of their lives. My goal as a therapist is to help people to focus on their strengths and to see the proactive and life-enhancing options that lie before them.

I use an Integrative and Eclectic Psychotherapeutic approach, drawing from the following specialties:

I have a keen interest in the mind-body connection, the role of our physical state of health on mood and behaviour (in particular women’s hormonal balance), and a holistic and whole-body approach to health and well-being. I teach about the stress response and self-regulation, using an understanding of the nervous system (the fight/flight/freeze response).

As a therapist, I am sensitive, hopeful, intuitive, compassionate, humorous, and positive. I believe that everyone can access their innermost reserves of strength to help them through difficult times, and I challenge my clients to take responsibility for their lives, guiding them in the work of self-discovery.

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)...

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is based on the science of Stephen Porges, and the technology of Integrated Listening Systems. The SSP uses the science of Polyvagal Theory and human autonomic nervous system regulation to help individuals with various symptoms.

From the Integrated Listening Systems Webpage on SSP:

The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in just five days in the following areas:

  • Social and emotional difficulties
  • Auditory sensitivities
  • Anxiety and trauma related challenges
  • Inattention
  • Stressors that impact social engagement.

See my BLOG on my personal experience with the Safe and Sound Protocol.

The SSP is an enjoyable listening exercise which is done for 1hr/day over a 5 day period. Again, from the Integrated Listening Systems Webpage on SSP:

"This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage. This allows the client to better interpret not only human speech, but, importantly, the emotional meaning of language. Once interpersonal interactions improve, spontaneous social behaviors and an enhanced ability to learn, self-regulate and engage are often seen."
