As a Registered Professional Counsellor with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association, I adhere to a strict standard of confidentiality. All the information between you and me, Kathleen Francis, will not be shared or disclosed to anyone without permission from you. I also adhere to a strict code of ethics. Exceptions: (1) Federal or Provincial Court (2) criminal code violations where physical and/or sexual abuse of children are involved (3) whereby any person’s life or health is in obvious danger.
When working with couples and families, there may be instances when individuals would like private sessions on their own. In this scenario, items may come up in individual sessions that need to be communicated to the other members of the couple/family. To prevent any conflicts of interest, I have these individuals sign a 'Non-Confidentiality Agreement', so that these issues that are brought up in private sessions, and which would be helpful to further the progress of the couples/family therapy, must be discussed either amongst the couple/family or during a couples/family therapy session.
Confidentiality goes both ways. I ask that any personal information I share during sessions (with the goal of helping the therapeutic process), remain confidential between us. Also, to respect your privacy when out in public in the community, I will not acknowledge you if I see you unless you first make contact with me.
Please note that this counselling service is not a crisis centre and the tele-counselling or online video counselling that I offer is not a crisis line. If you are feeling suicidal, experiencing severe emotional distress or worrying psychological symptoms, or if you feel the urge to harm others, please call 911 immediately or go to your nearest hospital or medical care provider for assistance.
Talk therapy, tele-counselling or online counselling is not appropriate for everyone. If during one of our consultations I ascertain that your presenting concerns are beyond the scope of my expertise, I will refer you to a qualified professional trained in handling your specific issue.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are not able to keep your appointment (ideally 24hrs notice). I understand that Life happens, and sometimes Life happens to me as well! I promise to let clients know of any scheduling changes with as much advance notice as possible.
If however there is a recurring series of late arrivals or missed appointments, as well as missed payments, this may become an issue we will have to address before moving forward with further sessions.
